The National Electoral Commission (NEC) yesterday destroyed a total of eighty thousand three hundred and fifty eight (80,358) faulty Voter ID cards from the Biometric voter registration and exhibition phases nationwide.
The faulty ID cards cut across different districts in the country including Kailahun 8,386, Kenema 13,288 Kono 6,243, Bombali 7,948, Kambia 761, Koinadugu 2,788, Port Loko 4,954, Tonkolili 4,474, Bo 3,511, Bonthe 58, Pujehun 10, Western Rural 3,596, Western Urban 22,359. The duplicate cards and cards without sum up to 1,017.
At the ceremony which was observed by different stakeholders and observation mission; UNDP, EU Observation Mission and Carter Foundation was facilitated by the Sierra Leone Fire Force.
The Chief Electoral Commission Christiana Thorpe said that this shows the level of transparency involved in the whole electioneering process, as these cards were not going to be used for any other purpose.
She said that the destroyed ID cards are the faulty ones from mistakes on the data during the registration process and those that were duplicated.
