Freetown, Sierra Leone – On Saturday, September 16, 2023, the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SLE) commemorated World Clean-Up Day, known as “For the Cleaning of The Planet,” by initiating a street cleaning campaign starting from their Walpole Street office in Freetown.
World Cleanup Day is an initiative celebrated globally and has secured a place on the United Nations Calendar. The event, which has captured the energy and attention of individuals, organizations, and nations worldwide, underscores the importance of collective action and global environmental awareness.
Dr. Patrick Coker, former President of NOC-SLE and Chairman of the Medical and Anti-Doping Commission of ANOCA, was the guest of honour at the event. He emphasized the significance of World Clean-Up Day, highlighting its annual nature and its role in promoting environmental consciousness.
The President of the National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games, Prince Sualley, explained that within the sporting world, the day is marked by organizing cleaning activities as a symbolic gesture. He stressed the importance of environmental consciousness and cleanliness in local communities.
James Fayia, Commissioner for Sports for All and Sports for Athletes Commissioner, reiterated the importance of World Clean-Up Day, which is designated by ANOCA. He noted that the symbolic cleaning exercise brought together athletes, officials, administration, partners, and members of the public, emphasizing the success of the event.
The NOC-SLE’s commitment to the environment and their efforts to encourage environmental, sports, and other organizations to participate in cleaning up the environment were evident during this meaningful event. BT/19/9/2023
