The Sierra Leone National Cycling Team which departed Freetown on Saturday by road to participate in the 22nd tour de Faso has arrived in Burkina Faso during the early hours on Tuesday.
The competition is expected to start on Friday with fifteen (15) countries expected to participate. The Sierra Leone delegation was expected to take six (6) cyclists to represent the country but due to lack of funding only four cyclists were able to make trip
The Cyclists told Awoko Sports that this is not the first Cycling tour they have participated in, as the first one was in Guinea were they competed with Cyclists from France the host Guinea and Liberia.
They assured Sierra Leoneans that they are going to excel and put the Country on the map through Cycling.
Competitors would be coming from Niger, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast or Mali, all traveling between Ouagadougou and Bobo¬Dioulasso.
Going directly north from Ouaga to Mali could be an adventure due to the road conditions and few commercial centers along the highway. This route is supposed to be upgraded. All of the other major routes are straightforward and in generally good condition.
Burkina Faso seems to most people to be a barren and featureless Country, but it is filled with subtleties which make it an interesting place to bicycle. Dori and Gorom¬Gorom can be interesting, as ¬¬ the weekly markets are energetic and literally colorful.
Most of the other places attracting tourists are clustered around Bobo¬Dioulasso, the hippopotamus pond, crystal clear springs, hills and waterfalls. The people are so pleasant; it is satisfying to ride in almost every place.
Some of the most beautiful scenery is in the Banfora / Bobo¬Dioulasso corridor. Here there are some inviting loops, which would be advantageous to those with mountain bikes.
