The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), conducted a three-day seminar on Social Security Reforms for Africa at the Bintumani Hotel Conference Hall on March 22, 2011 and will end on Thursday March 24, 2011.
Mr. Samuel Bangura, Director General of NASSIT in addressing the delegation, spoke about the widest scope of social security that has been implemented to address the problem of poverty. “Many people were unable to save money on their own, but by joining the scheme you are sure of having something when you retire from work or unable to work due to poor health” , Samuel Bangura said .
He further spoke about government’s commitment in providing adequate finance for workers joining the scheme because there are certain constraints facing them in processing these benefits. He stated that they need to make an amendment on the Security Act.
The Informal Social Ground Scheme will be available with so many facilities and information sharing according to Mr. Bangura. “Bringing these reforms is very risky because you have to develop national insurance scheme which will provide protection package”, he added.
The NASSIT seminar, Mr. Bangura said, is to allow participants from member states to learn and share experience.
The Guinean Social Security Director General, Mr. Malick Sankhon, said that it is a big challenge for him to address the ceremony and therefore thanked the Director General of NASSIT Sierra Leone for giving him such opportunity.
Further, Mr. Sankhon spoke on how the reform can fight poverty in Africa. He stated that 93% of new employment with special reference to medical insurance that is being provided by NASSIT to help in the fight against poverty.
In conclusion, he said that in previous meetings held in other countries, they were not given the opportunity given to them in Sierra Leone and as a result, he commended NASSIT staff for their effort in seeing this reform accomplished.
The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Mr. Hindolo Tyre, stated that the aim of Social Security worldwide is to improve the lot of workers and their dependants.
He further stated that the choice of the Social Security scheme is pertinent and thinks it came at the right time.
