A scheduled ‘National Mask Up Campaign’ show by the management of LAKE Production Sierra Leone Limited headlining Nigerian global hitmaker Kizz Daniel will not be staged as planned on 16th January 2021 at the National Stadium in Freetown. Despite gains made in the fight to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country, the National COVID-19 Emergency Response Centre (NaCOVERC) has told the show’s organisers that “it does not consider concerts the right vehicle for sensitisation on health measures against corona at this time.”
This message from NaCOVERC was received with mixed feelings by the management of LAKE Production especially after they had engaged in publicity, campaigns and contract with local musicians. It should be recalled that this is the second failed planned staged performance by Kizz Daniel in Sierra Leone by the same entertainment group.
In a press statement, LAKE Production CEO Alhaji K. Tarawallie expressed frustration over the decision, saying “it’s disheartening and heartbreaking to inform that our proposed 16 January show in Freetown with KIZZ Daniel continues to face challenges.” He informed, “We have put in so much time, efforts, energy and resources, but Sierra Leone’s COVID-19 Response Secretariat has just informed us that it does not consider concerts the right vehicle for sensitization on health measures against COVID-19.”
The CEO said, “Management initially decided to use the event to embark on a massive ‘National Mask Up Campaign,’ which was arranged against the backdrop that, the event would follow and adhere to all COVID-19 preventions.” He said it was also their aim to distribute 20,000 face masks to fans entering the national stadium for the show.
For LAKE Production, according to their press statement, “It means, despite our efforts, NaCOVERC has refused to partner with us and to give approval, for the show to go ahead after an initial approval to go ahead with our KIZZ Daniel proposal.” The group, however, assured their fans that “we shall continue our engagements with NaCOVERC and the Sierra Leone government to see how things will trend before we postpone the show to a subsequent date that would be approved by NaCOVERC.”
Alhaji K. Tarawallie implored all by saying, “We kindly ask for resolve and patience from all KIZZ Daniel fans as we continue to battle this out. Payment has already been made for this event with regards hotel, air flight, transportations, media campaigns and other expenses.”
Concerts are generally seen as super spreader events for COVID-19, where majority of the people do not adhere to COVID regulations by wearing face masks and distancing themselves. MK/09/12/2020
