A three day training workshop for teachers on School Management Committees organized by the Ministry of Education Youths and Sport has ended at the Home Economics Centre along Nyandeyama road in Kenema city.
The Deputy Director of Education East (DDE) John Swaray explaining about the purpose of the workshop said it is to train teachers to gain the knowledge and understanding of teachers about child protection and how it relates to child education and development in the country.
He said by so doing it will enable teachers to develop the broader understanding of the psychological need and development of today’s children, and it will also enhance the capacity of teachers in the management and resolution of conflicts involving school pupils and to assist teachers develop peace building skills to be used in the communities and the schools.
Mr. Donald Lewis the Statistician of the Kenema City Council in his contribution said it is the methodology of teachers which can attract children to pay more attention in class. He disclosed that the council has disbursed text books to the Ministry which are now being distributed and that these text books are to be used for their intended purpose.
He cautioned teachers not to sell the book and that any one caught selling the book will face the full penalty of the law.
Mr. Emmanuel Sartie who is the Measurement and Evaluation Officer of the Kenema City Council said the central focus on the workshop is the needs and rights of children which the two councils are working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Youths and Sports to improve.
He added that the parents are to help the teachers by providing some of the learning and teaching equipment used by the teachers and the pupils as the government alone cannot provide all the necessary needs of the schools.
He appealed to the facilitators to extend similar training to other parts of the country in the very near future
