The deputy minister said the last sets of coxswains in the ministry are now older, leaving a gap in the sector as a result of the long absence of such training opportunities for the past two decades.
Turay says upon completion of the 10 days training, all 17 coxswains should consider themselves as staff of the Ministry, which require them to conduct themselves in a more responsible and professional manner.

He told the new recruits to take the training serious saying at the end, it is expected that all participants will be certified with a license to operate as boat pilot in the country.
The Commander of the Sierra Leone Navy, Naval Captain Philip Juana, said the training is aimed at ensuring that after completing their tasks, all 17 personnel will be proud as professional Coxswains, and they would have been equipped with the requisite knowledge to operate the various boats.
He says the care and maintenance of the boats squarely lies on them so, he emphasized the aspect of maintenance, care, patriotism, and good working order of the boats.
The SARCOM Manager of the Sierra Leone Maritimes Administration, Alfred Kefason, said he is happy and appreciates that the Ministry of Fisheries and the Navy, are embarking on such professional training, tailored for personnel, that will be serving the country. He called on the beneficiaries to focuse and be vigilant and participate well because according to him, the training will change their lives.
He confessed that, the institution has never trained Coxswains in the country but in the past, they were engaged in the issuance of license and certificate to all of them. He used the platform to encourage the trainees to take the training serious by making the ministry, government, and the country proud saying such training has never been done in the nation.
