Before the September 8 presidential run off, the police in Tongo Division and other authorities in the Lower Bambara chiefdom had to put a ban on the activities of diamond mining and palm wine tapping.
The ban was placed to restrict the movement of residents in the chiefdom when news broke out that some people in the community were bent on creating problems on polling day.
The Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Tongo Division, Aiah Komba, said the police could not have compromised the people’s security at that time, saying that the best means of maintaining calm at that crucial time was to place a ban on the two predominant economic activities. He said, “the ban has now been lifted because residents went through the polls with less problem with the police on top of the situation”. Many residents in this chiefdom are now rejoicing over this development.
