Mercury International doles out Le35m on Football

Mercury International (SL) in space of two weeks has doled out Le35m. Ten Million Leones to the Western Area Football Association (WAFA) for their General Assembly/Congress which was held over the weekend in Freetown. Retired Football Heroes received Le25m to defend their title in the Retired Football Heroes Nations’ Cup in Mali. Presenting the cheque to WAFA officials on behalf of the company, Management Consultant, Martin Michael, said despite its earlier decision to suspend all forms of sponsorships to football related matters due to defamatory statements initially made by the then WAFA Treasurer, James J.J. Fofanah, Mercury Int’l thought it wise to reconsider its stance because of the development of the game in the country. He said: “we received a letter from WAFA appealing to us for sponsorship to organize their General Assembly/Congress and although we had pronounced the suspension of all sponsorships to football until further notice we decided as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility to come onboard and continue our support towards the development of sports in the country.” Michael further expressed his company’s continued support to football because as he put it: “sport betting is our primary business.” He further stated that Mercury Int’l will reconsider withdrawing the Le 200m sponsorship to the local Premier League Board (PLB) for the 2011/2012 league season. Receiving the cheque, Alhaji Alim Unisa Sesay thanked Mercury International for its timely intervention, adding that “the intervention of Mercury International is indeed a blessing in disguise.” The outgoing WAFA Chairman Unisa Alim Sesay ‘Awoko’ continued: “Mercury has been assisting WAFA all this while and we want to say thank you for the very good relationship and support. I want to ensure you that my successor will go along the same path so as to maintain this cordial relationship with your company.”
