The Minister of Energy, Power and Water Resources, Prof. Ogunlade R. Davidson on Monday this week officially opened a two week training session for newly recruited Radiation and Protection officers at the Bumbuna Hydroelectric project conference room, Siaka Stevens Street.
In his statement the Minister thanked the expert Prof. Cyril Schandorf and Dr. Jozef Sabol for this great venture. He admonished the trainees to pay attention, as radiation protection training is very important for our country. The Minister added that as a ministry they will not be afraid of using radiation to save Sierra Leone as it is God given.
The Chairman of the programme Dr. Samuel Edmond Nunie who is the Head of the Physics Department, Fourah Bay College in his statement said that Radiation was introduced to the ordinary man in a violent way. According to him, radiation which is to promote the livelihood of people is hazardous but helpful.
He added “we need a fire regulatory body to show how to use it and this is what has brought us here for a two-week training.
The Chief Radiation Protection/Executive Secretary Mr. Josephus J Kongo said he is grateful to Government for making provision in the 2009 Budget for the recruitment of additional staff.
He said the International Atomic Energy places much importance on the training of Radiation Protection Officers. Adequate training is needed otherwise they will be easily exposed ionizing radiation during their course of work to protect the general public, workers at X-ray and other radiation facilities, patients in hospitals undergoing diagnosis and therapy where ionizing radiation sources are used and protect the environment from the harmful effects on radiation he added.
Mr. Kongo further said having a university degree in Physics, Chemistry and other basic sciences does not make you a radiation protection officer until when the individual is trained and practices for a long period. He paid tribute to the experts for accepting to provide this training course.
In his concluding statement, he said after the training the young radiation officers will be matured.
The Expert, for his part, said they were glad to participate in the training and that they had come with a desire to save this country. They encouraged the trainees to be attentive and take advantage of what he called “fantastic training”.
