You cannot write the history book about cycling in Sierra Leone without mentioned of one of the elite cyclists during his days Abu Bangura (Abu Big Foot)
This great cyclist started cycling in 1982 and decided to quit as an active cyclist in 2005. Since he started cycling he has won several local competitions including the annual boxing day sports at the national stadium and other provincial competitions.
Abu Bangura said that over his 20 years as an active cyclist, he has only represented Sierra Leone twice in international competitions in Guinea
where he was among the first five in the competition
He stated that he was supposed to represent Sierra Leone in South Korea in 1988 after winning all the three trials he was dropped and another cyclist, Franklyn Williams was selected for the trip
After that incidence he has to lost some confidence in the then executive and his appetite for the sport starting dying down gradually
Abu Bangura mentioned that during his cycling career he was not able to represent Sierra Leone in major competitions and during their days they were not competing for money but for their names
He mentioned that because of some amount of money that have been put in the disciplines by this current executive the sports is now recognized local and international
The 48 year old former cycling champion mentioned that since he started cycling he has only wore shoes on one or two occasions. Wearing shoes made me very uncomfortable throughout any competition
It obstructed my performance and it was only when I took off the shoes that I became the real Abu Big Foot, he confessed. He noted that he started his educational career at the Municipal Primary School at Ferguson Street but was unable to attend secondary school .
After his primary school career he started repairing and sales of bicycle parts at his 39 John Street in Freetown were he was born and stays presently Abu Bangura said he his trying his best to see how he can contribute to the development of the association and he is planning to have a cycling club very soon
Abu Bangura is a fine cyclist but was unable to progress to international standard because of his limited educational background .
The name Abu Big Foot is an household name in Freetown when it comes to cycling and he current executive see Abu Big Foot as an hero in the discipline.
