The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in collaboration with a consortium of 14 African Civil Society groups in a bid to champion the promotion of democracy, good governance, human rights and the rule of law in Africa, have lunched the first edition of the journalism awards on African Union Charter. The competition awards scheme forms part of activities under the ‘Africa We Want’ project titled, “Mobilizing Civil Society Support for implementation of the African Governance Architecture,” implemented by the consortium with funding support from the European Commission.
The media awards are geared towards ensuring journalists in the continent assist in the popularization of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG). The awards are targeting stories that have been published or produced on any compelling issues around Democracy, Elections and Governance per country in Africa. According to a statement from MFWA, “The awards is an initiative to recognize and honor journalists in the continent who have been working on critical analytical and high-quality reports that are advancing the course of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA) in every country in the continent.” Applicants must be a citizen of AU member states and must be working with a media organization (print, electronics, online) in Anglophone, Francophone or Lusophone AU member state. The organizers furthered that all entries for the awards must have been published or broadcast between 1st January 2017 and 16 August 2019. Finalists for the journalism awards on the ACDEG will be announced on 1st October 2019. The deadline for submission of entry for the awards is Friday 16th August 2019 and the application and award details can be accessed at www.mfwa.org
