The prayer plan of the newly inaugurated Mayor of the Freetown Municipality has come under sharp criticism from a candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) party who contested the last council elections.
Mr Sheriff Barrie opposed the Mayors call for prayers on Friday as a decision that should be done on the contrary. He said he was of the conviction that God was not responsible for the prevalent situations in the country but rather, man was responsible for the poverty, misery and hardship of the country.
He cautioned that instead of asking God to save the country from problems, prayers should be conducted against those who rob the nation. “Therefore, instead of asking God to redeem us from our problem, let us start to pray first for divine intervention so that the omnipotent God will expose those who are responsible for our poverty”
Speaking in a sociological fashion, Mr Barrie stated that politicians should avoid using politics of the sacred to gain sympathy, rather they should focus on developing the country. He said politicians were in that habit of always using religion as he said, former President Kabbah utilized it based on the muslim religion and also Johnny Paul Koroma using the born again belief.
He challenged those that will always blame God when things have gone bad to re-imagine themselves.
