Drama unfolded yesterday when the Mayor of the Freetown City Council (FCC) Herbert George Williams handed over a 5KVA Stephill generator, computer and chairs to the Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Jacob Jusu Saffa.
The ceremony took place in the court yard between FCC and the SLPP office, and attracted 49 councilors and supporters of both the APC and SLPP party, big party stalwarts of APC and the Commissioner of the Political Party Registration Commission (PPRC) R.A Caesar.
In his remarks, FCC Chief Administrator Bowenson Philips said that the gesture was the strengthening of our relationship to our neighbor (SLPP head office) as a symbol of co-existence with a peaceful neighbour.
He added that, the leadership of Herbert George Williams wants to ensure that there are no impediments or stumbling blocks in the development of our city.
He disclosed that the FCC has undertaken 35 projects in the city; this he said was because of the renewal of our revenue drive, adding that there are many other functions which the FCC will address shortly.
In his statement, Herbert George Williams said that, it is written in the Bible to love your neighbors as yourself. He added that it is very wise and prudent to have good neighbors, adding that the gesture was to strengthen the good relationship with the SLPP.
The Mayor appealed to the SLPP Secretary General not to look at the quantum of the items but to receive it in good faith.
Receiving the items, Jacob Saffa thanked the Mayor for the gesture and reaffirmed their party’s commitment to peace and development in the country.
The SLPP Secretary General said “we appreciate it so much but that we in the opposition will still continue to oppose on certain issues.”
