Mayor Brima Kargbo of Kenema City Council who is on a visit to the United States has been awarded honorary citizenship of Houston, Texas by Mayor Anise Parker.
The ceremony took place on the 29th April, when Mayor Brima Kargbo and five members of the Sierra Leone Kenema District Development Mission (SLKDDM) visited the Mayor of Houston at a reception organized on his behalf.
Mayor Brima Kargbo, who is visiting the U.S.
on the invitation of SLKDDM, is looking out for a city that will twin with Kenema for development projects.
It is being anticipated that Kenema will succeed in twinning with Houston as the modalities are being worked out.
Mayor Kargbo on his arrival met with Rev. Fr Johannes who is Vicar of Christ the King Episcopal Church in Houston, where the Mayor was able to meet with members of SLKDDM and other Sierra Leoneans as well as foreign business people who want to invest in Sierra Leone.
Among the would be investors he met was a Nigerian couple and they had a wonderful and fruitful discussion after the Mayor had briefed them on the advantages and facilities available in his city as well as the entire country.
Mayor Kargbo also visited the Al-Razaq Computer Services and met with the CEO, Mohamed Idrisa Iscandari who after deliberations pledged to 25 new computers to SLKDDM and promised to deliver them in one week to the local contact Fr. Johannes and Dr P.K. Muana.
Mayor Kargbo held closed door meeting with the leadership of Christ the King Episcopal Church and according to Foday Sesay, the Vice President of SLKDDM the meeting was promising and they hope to gain enormously.
The report also stated that Mayor Brima Kargbo met with the African Congressional Caucus for African Affairs and had a successful meeting with them as he is soliciting support for his city.
He also met the Police District Commissioner of Houston Raymond Kelly where he handed over Sierra Leone’s Pledge to him and had a wonderful and fruitful meeting with the Commissioner on ways the Houston Police can assist the Sierra Leone Police.
On Sunday 2nd May, a send-off party was organized by the SLKDDM for the Mayor. Many Sierra Leoneans who hailed from Kenema during the party pledged their support to help develop the District and others have shown interest to become members of SLKDDM.
Mayor Brima Kargbo is expected to leave on Thursday and should arrive in Sierra Leone the next day. By Austin Thomas
