Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In the heart of the Bombali region, StarBurst Park, a local sports recreational facility in Makama village, Makeni, orchestrated the eighth edition of the Equal Opportunity Women’s Championship, creating an atmosphere of joy for female teams. The recent conclusion of this 15-week competition, held at Wusum Stadium, saw Malimba Queens of Binkolo emerge as the victorious club in a hard-fought tournament featuring four teams.
Despite having to travel over 13 miles from Binkolo to Makeni to face Suba United Football Club in the grand finals, the Malimba Queens secured a 2-0 win, marking their dominance in the tournament. The determined visitors took the lead with a goal from star player Ferreh Bangura, who claimed the highly coveted Equal Opportunity Cup Golden Boot with her impressive performance.
Suba United, led by forward Jeneba Koroma, made multiple attempts to equalize but faced resilient defense from the well-coordinated Malimba Queens. The Queens sealed their victory with a calculated finish from second-half substitute Mbalu Kamara, securing the first Equal Opportunity title for Binkolo.
In addition to the prestigious title and gold medals, the Malimba Queens received a prize of NLe 2,000 and an extra NLe 500 for finishing at the top of the group stage with 13 points. Suba United, as runners-up, took home a prize of NLe 1000, and their captain, Jeneba Koroma, was named the Most Valuable Player of the competition.
Players and officials from both Malimba Queens and Suba United, in a post-match interview with Awoko Newspaper, lauded the organizers of the Equal Opportunity contest for elevating women’s football in the north through this inter-club competition held over the past 24 months. Ferreh Bangura and Jeneba Koroma expressed their gratitude for the valuable recognition received, considering these awards as significant milestones in their playing careers.
“As female players, we are thrilled and proud to have participated in this tournament, and we hope it continues to grow and become even more successful in the future,” they concluded. ARW/12/1/2024
