Makeni, SIERRA LEONE – On Monday, the tranquil city of Makeni in Northern Sierra Leone was rattled by a disturbance in its schooling system, fueled by widespread panic triggered by unverified reports of an impending strike action by unidentified individuals.
The unsettling incident unfolded in the early hours of the day, resulting in both school gates and classrooms being locked shut due to the apprehension stemming from the rumoured strike.
Makeni, nestled in the northern region, is still grappling with the lingering effects of a tragic uprising that transpired on August 10th of the previous year. The tragic events of that day claimed lives and left deep scars in the collective memory of the city’s residents. This historical context has contributed significantly to the heightened panic among the populace.
For some families who lost loved ones in last year’s tragic events, the wounds of loss are still fresh, further adding to the prevailing tension within the city.
While a handful of dedicated teachers and school administrators did report for duty, their reluctance to comment on the situation was evident. This suggests their unease, although they remain committed to delivering education to their pupils.
In stark contrast, parents voiced their apprehensions about the safety of their children. Many opted to keep their children at home, prioritizing their well-being and shielding them from potential harm associated with the mysterious protesters. These concerns were exacerbated by threats disseminated through widely circulated audio recordings related to the purported demonstration.
Furthermore, transportation services in the city experienced disruptions, notably affecting commercial motorbike services, a common mode of commuting. The absence of reliable transportation posed challenges for parents attempting to send their children to school.
Despite these disruptions, Makeni managed to maintain relative peace, largely due to the concerted efforts of the Sierra Leone Police and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, who worked diligently to ensure security.
However, the incident underscores the far-reaching impact of rumours and fear on daily life and education in Makeni. Many residents are taking precautionary measures to safeguard their own safety and that of their children in the midst of uncertainty. ARW/12/9/2023
