A spokesman for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office has criticized pro-independence statements made by the island’s leader on Saturday.
He said the situation at Chen Shui-bian’s rally for a referendum on joining the UN under the name of Taiwan shows the plan is failing to win widespread public support.
The spokesman said the central government will keep a close watch over developments on the other side of the Strait, and is prepared to cope with serious situations.
