Mainland official blasts Taiwan leader´s new secessionist remarks

A spokesman for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office has criticized pro-independence statements made by the island’s leader on Saturday.
He said the situation at Chen Shui-bian’s rally for a referendum on joining the UN under the name of Taiwan shows the plan is failing to win widespread public support.
The spokesman said the central government will keep a close watch over developments on the other side of the Strait, and is prepared to cope with serious situations.
The spokesman said the mainland has been doing its utmost to improve cross-Strait relations, but will never allow anyone to separate Taiwan from the motherland in any manner
