Councilors of the Kailahun District Council have resolved that all defaulting tax or revenue collectors should be prosecuted in the court of law.
This resolution came as a result of reports from the council treasurer – Mr. Alfred Conteh who accused some revenue collectors recruited by council that they are ill bent on converting tax money to their personal use.
He said registration of community-based organizations; NGOs, Business Enterprises, License and local revenue are not easy to come by.
Deputy Chairman of Kailahun District Council – Mr. Nelson Lahai opined that the defaulting tax collectors should not only be prosecuted but also terminated and new revenue collectors recruited.
He explained that other councils in Kono and Kenema generate huge funds from other sources such as mining but Kailahun council relies only on local tax, other wise the Kailahun local council might collapse.
Councilor Moinina Conteh says all development programs in the District are tax payers money from other places and therefore maintained that any Chiefdom or Ward failing to pay tax would be marginalized from development grants.
He requested each and every councilor to educate their Ward members on the importance of tax in community development.
