The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Freetown City Council, Kadie Sesay, has disclosed that the operation “Sweep Clean” is not intended primarily to destabilize traders selling along the streets of Freetown.
Since the council has begun demolishing illegal structures, prominent business areas such as Victoria park, Sani Abacha Street and other affected areas are no exception; reiterating that any structure erected on government land and side walks would be demolished irrespective of political affiliation.
She also stated that in a bid to quell concerns raised by traders who are directly affected, the Council has set aside at least sixty million Leones for construction of a market at Sewa Ground.
The structure will house evicted traders soon at the Victoria Park. Moreover, since the operation cuts across all sites where street trading is done, the famous Abacha Street traders will temporarily do their businesses at their respective points as long as they do not put up structures and do not go beyond the line of demarcation which has already been drawn.
A proposed site for a market has also been identified for them at Fisher Street.
