Lawyers for Andre Hope who lost the last Sierra Leone Athletics Association Elective Congress, have written a letter to IAAF President, Lamin Diack, threatening court action over the outcome of the election.
The letter stated that the entire electoral process was flawed, un-constitutional and lacked the expected standards of neutrality and impartiality
The letter went further “our client therefore rejects the result in its entirety and has consulted us to lodge a petition at the High Court of Sierra Leone in order to rectify these grave anomalies and procedural irregularities.
We therefore crave your indulgence to put on hold any action (direct or Implied) which might tend to ratify or give congnisance to the result of the recently concluded elections until the outcome of the court petition”. After receiving the letter, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) General Secretary, Pierre Weiss, wrote to the new SLAA President Abdul Karim Sesay in which he stated:
“After some years of conflicts amongst the stakeholders of the Athletics in your country, I was pleased to learn that during the election congress that was held on April 3, 2011 with the attendance of Mr Cheikh Thiare’ you were elected as President of the Sierra Leone Amateur Athletics Association.
I would like to take this opportunity to convey my cordial congratulations and best wishes to you to a successful term in office”.
The letter went further to thank Mr Abdul Karim Sesay very much “for the communication you sent along with the minutes of the election congress which I read with interest and appreciated the fact that the Minister of Sports and the President of the National Sports Council of your country were present during the whole election process.
We do hope that the peace is back in your Federation and in this context, we are embarrassed to have learnt that a barrister wrote recently to our president Lamin Diack contesting the validity of the elections.
As a new President of an IAAF Member Federation, it is my pleasure to inform you that you will receive by mail copy of’ Leading Athletics”, a practical guide for new Presidents and General Secretaries of member Federations. It also has useful information and advice regarding the relationship between member Federations and the IAAF.
Athletics Fans are always eager to know more about new persons in the Athletics Family and on this occasion ,the IAAF news would like to properly introduce you to our public. Therefore, for this purpose ,I would appreciate receiving a copy of your curriculum vitae.
The letter also stated that “if Mr Abdul Karim Sesay requires any guidance and/or assistance, let him be assured that Pierre Weiss and colleagues at the IAAF Headquarters remain at your disposal “
In conclusion, the letter stated that they are looking forward to have a good working relationship with Mr Abdul Karim Sesay’s executive for the promotion and development of Athletics in Sierra Leone.
