Kingtom/ Bomeh Community in desperate need of water supply

Kingtom Bomeh Community at Kingtom located in the Western Area of Freetown, one of the sites where garbage from the municipality is deposited, is calling on authorities to provide tap water for the community. Speaking to Ms Isha, mother of four children, said it is very difficult to do her domestics without tap water. “It is strenuous for my children to carry on with their school work at the same time fetching water till 11 O’clock,” Isha said. She stated that her son failed to attain class six which, she said, is because he did not have time to study. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, Article 25 states; “right to a standard of living adequate for their health and well-being (including food, clothing, housing, medical care necessary social services…” A 57 year-old man in the community, Pa Musa Kamara, said the community is in a deplorable condition stating that they have no nearby health centre, poor water supply and poor conditions of service for the youths. He alleged that the Councilor and the Parliamentarian are not doing anything for the community, but they are waiting for any politician to campaign to them. Pa Kamara lamented that the community people are now aware of political issues because of how the politicians have treated them including the youth in the community. He said youths are now involved in skills training and do not indulge in matters involving any form of violence. Speaking to one of the youths in the community, Abdul Kamara, alias ‘Sagai 13’ who was looking disgruntled, said they are not happy at all with the administrative functions of the government. “We do not have any development in our community but we have made up our minds to empower ourselves and not to depend on any politician or party politics,” Kamara said. Kamara said people fight on the pipe in evening hours for water which, he said, is not good for the community. “It will be fine if people fight for clean water but for dirty water is too bad” He said the pipe water in the picture is used for drinking and doing other domestic jobs. Highlighting other problems in the community, laborers working at Bomeh said there are few houses in the community that can boast of toilets, as all the rest use the Bomeh site. The laborers added that they are always playing with toilet while they are cleaning the dump site. They called on the authorities to find solution for the Kingtom Bomeh site community, because “they are really suffering and that even the laborers have no place to toilet.” By Emmanuella Kallon
