Kingho mining records 2nd train accident
Sierra Leone: The Chinese Kingho Railway and Port Company Limited, has confirmed a second train accident this time in Karene district, involving an adult who was confirmed dead as a result of injuries sustained from the accident. The accident seems to have occurred almost at night, when the train is active and security are expected to be present in all crossing points.
In a press statement the company said, “At 20:37 in Kilometre 90.2, Karene district, train number 152 which departed the Pepel Shipping Port for the New Tonkolili Iron Ore Mines on Wednesday 21st July 2021, hit a man identified as Alie Koroma. He later died from injuries sustained.” The company further alleged, “He was later identified by his relatives to be a lunatic, allegedly loitering on the rails along a thick forest where there was no level crossing due to high drainage soils embarkment.”
The issue of train accident including derailment, hit and kill on the rail tracks have been discussed at high and lower level as well as by community leaders within and around the route of the train. The company said, they had employed 270 flagmen to control the flow of people as well as the train, and to as well educate their communities on the dangers attached to the rails especially when the train is in motion.
The company and the police investigators have visited the scene late last night. They have recovered the corpse and conveyed it to the Port Loko Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is still ongoing.”
Earlier in the year the first rail accident was recorded involving a young child.
