The livestock division in the ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Kenema has organized a sensitization workshop for poultry farmers and chicken dealers at the IDA compound.
The workshop, according to the district director of Agriculture John Lahai, was to sensitize chicken dealers and poultry farmers about the avian influenza or bird flue.
Mr Lahai said, “the workshop aimed at exposing the people to the signs of the disease whenever it affects or occurs, and practices in preventing the disease”. In his contribution the Kenema district vetinary officer in the ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Sorie Bangura, said, “avian influenza or bird flue is caused by a virus called H5N1.”
Dr Bangura encouraged and called on the people to report immediately to the vetinary division of the ministry whenever they suspected the disease was affecting livestock in their communities.
