Residents in Kenema district can now breathe a sign of relief as the news of a gynaecologist doctor at the government hospital in Kenema keeps spreading like wild fire into the community.
Government hospital in Kenema city along Combema road is the only referral hospital in the district and has been without a gynaecologist for several months.
The new Doctor Augustine Jimissa has been serving as a gynaecologist doctor at Gondama camp under the MSF-Belgium in Bo Southern Sierra Leone.
Dr. Jimissa is from Soa chiefdom in the Kono district eastern province. He did his primary and secondary school in Kono district and later did his 6th form at Prince of Wales in Freetown and then entered the College of Medicine in Freetown until completion. He started practicing as medical doctor in 2005 after completion of his course.
Dr. Jimissa was later posted to the government hospital in Kenema by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation effective April 2009 but started work on 12th April 2009. But he is shuttling between Bo and Kenema city because of accommodation problem in Kenema city. Dr. Jimissa said a staff quarter has been allocated to him in Kenema but it needs rehabilitation which he is waiting to take effect.
He disclosed that the entire maternity ward has a problem saying that the electricity and the plumbing work was poorly done in the entire building which makes the ward very uncomfortable for every one because of lack of water in the ward. The theatre in the ward is not functioning because of the absence of light and electricity but he is presently using the general theatre, where he said most of the equipment are worn out and need replacement.
Dr. Jimissa is appealing to the government and other humanitarian organizations to immediately come to the aid of the hospital by equipping the theatre with modern equipment.
