A one day sensitization meeting of farmers in the Eastern region has been held at the Sierra Leone National Association of Farmers office along Maxwell Khobe Street in Kenema city.
Addressing the farmers during the meeting, the chairman of the meeting who is also the Deputy Chief Administrator of the Kenema District Council Augustine Amara thanked all for attending the meeting and called on all the farmers to have love for each other pointing out that everyone should put aside politics and focus on developmental activities.
He said one of the major priorities of His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma is agriculture and he therefore appealed to all to join hands with the government in order to achieve the food security dream.
The administrator explained that people always talk of lack of food in the country where the country is blessed with vast land to farm but depends on importation for survival. Mr. Amara said there is everything in the bush that human beings need and encouraged all to avoid the big towns and go into the bush and engage in agriculture.
In his contribution the Director of Extension Services in the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security Ben Massaquoi who also doubles as Coordinator Farmers Based Organizations said they came to Kenema to inform the farmers in the region about the formation of the National Federation of Farmers of Sierra Leone.
He explained that after the war there was the formation of many farmers groups in the country and they later found out that it was not effective.
For this reason he said they all came together sometime in August 2008 and formed the National Federation of Farmers of Sierra Leone which is going to serve as the umbrella group for all groups. Mr. Massaquoi said at this initial stage they have only formed committees and that the executive election will come later this year.
He therefore called on all farmers in the region to join the National Federation of Farmers saying that it will seek the interest of all farmers in the nation.
