The Kenema District Council (KDC) has elected there vice chairperson and other committee chairpersons for the various committees set up in the council among the just elected councilors.
The ceremony, which brought together other stakeholders in the city, took place at the Kenema District Council along Maxwell Khobe Street in Kenema city.
In his opening remarks the chairperson of the meeting who is also the chairman of the Kenema District Council Mr. Patrick Sarmu alias “Hugbatay” meaning to arrange welcomed all to the meeting and thanked the electorate for electing them for the second time. Mr. Sarmu extended gratitude to the Government of Sierra Leone for making it possible for the election to be conducted in this part of the country under very conducive manner though there were bit of harassment and intimidation during and after the process.
The chairman further said for any institution to succeed, there must be formidable and committed staff, therefore, the council would make sure that the administration is expanded to an extent that it would be able to handle the numerous affairs of the council.
The council would also make sure that the welfare of staff is given priority to enhance staff’s commitment to council he said.
He also maintained that his staff would make sure that the link between the council and the government that is, provincial coordinating committee is functional as spelt out in the local Government Act. 2004.
The Inter-Agency forum, which is the only way through which NGO’s Ministries/ Departments Institutions meet and exchange ideas about how each operates in the district, council would see to it that meeting to this effect, is regularized.
“It is this council’s intention when funds are available from our own source of revenue to secure land for the construction of low cost complex, which will serve as a source of revenue for council and would also provide accommodation for our needy population.
“Generally, there is that belief that the council laid foundation in terms of development in every part of this district. This council would therefore, utilize all resources that would be available to see that the foundation laid is improved and extended.
“In the area of agriculture the council would help government by using council’s own source of revenue to provide farming tools and create seed bank in respective chiefdoms, council would also encourage the rehabilitation of tree crops in every part of the district.
“For social welfare, gender and children affairs the council will encourage the gender expert to design gender sensitive programs for the improvement of livelihood of women/men. In this area, the local development fund, that is, Kenema District Economic Recovery Project would be used in that direction.
“For Energy and Power the council would continue to see that SALWACO and Rural water supply provide water wells, gravity in every part of the District and will also encourage and sensitize the community to build their own toilet using local materials.
“On solid waste management the council would continue to provide solid waste tools and equipments to our communities and would support them through sensitization and training to follow the principle of community lead total sanitation (CLTS) whereby communities are empowered to construct their own toilets.
“For Local Tax collection if these council’s are to stay, the rate and which local tax is paid must be aggressively improved. My council would institute byelaws in that direction that would compel citizens to pay their taxes. And when funds are available, the council would intend to create job facilities for our brothers and sisters who may deserve them.
“Education, roads, sports and housing would also be a priority of the council.”
At the end of the meeting the former vice chairman of the Kenema District Council Luseni A.Sheriff councilor of Nomo and part of Tunkia chiefdom went unopposed by re-electing him as vice chairperson of the council, while councilor Fatmata Dassama of ward 56 in Dama chiefdom became the chairperson for the Health Committee of the Kenema District Council.
Momoh S.G. Massaquoi became the chairman of the Agricultural committee. For the Development and Planning Committee councilor Lansana Bockarie and councilor Joseph Bernard Jimmy went into polls, which ends by making Lansana Bockarie as the committee chairman by receiving 28 votes as against 09 votes.
Councilor Mohamed Gobba of ward 48 in Simbaru chiefdom became the chairperson of the mining committee of the Kenema district council. For the Education Committee Peter Galia became the chairman by receiving 25 votes haven went into polls with councilor Simeon Hindoveh Gauja who got ten votes. Eric Mohai became the chairman of establishment committee responsible for recruitment and Mohamed Prince Lahai became the Project contract officer of the Kenema District Council.
The three paramount chiefs represented in the Kenema District Council were Paramount chief of Kandu Leppiama chiefdom Madam Teresa Vibbi, Paramount chief PC Prince Pewa of Langura chiefdom who is the PRO for the council of Paramount Chiefs Kenema district and PC Alhaji Sandi Momoh Fowai of Dama chiefdom and Mr. Chalie J. Kallon is the Chief Administrator (CA) assisted by Augustine Amara in the Kenema District Council.
