The Kenema City Council (KCC) has embarked on drainage cleaning exercises along the major streets of the city.
Speaking to the Health Coordinator of the Kenema City Council Mohamed Nyallay along the main Hangha road, he told Awoko that the council has contracted the services of youths of various organizations within the city to clean the drainages and the streets there by making the city clean.
He said they have started with the main Hangha road and will later target other streets in the city.
The health coordinator maintained that water flows across the streets whenever it rains causing embarrassment to the people of the city because the drainages are blocked. This he explained is because people are always depositing garbage in the drainages.
He warned all and sundry to stop depositing garbage in the drainages as according to him the council will not hesitate to deal with anyone caught in the act.
He disclosed that the Kenema City Council is instituting strict measures to deal with those who deposit garbage on the streets within the city with a fine of one hundred thousand leones or one-month imprisonment.
Meanwhile the youths and staff members of Makasa guesthouse and Simbaru Pharmacy along Humunya Avenue have engaged in a road reconstruction project along Demby Street and Humunya Avenue junction in city.
Speaking to Mr. Mohamed Sannoh of Makasa enterprise at the work site he disclosed that the development of Kenema city does not only lie in the hands of the Kenema City Council but as he put it a collective responsibility of all well meaning Sierra Leoneans.
Mr. Sannoh stressed that as responsible citizens the reconstruction drive along the Humunya Avenue and Demby Street is the felt need of the community people living along the area and business people who according to him ply the road for their livelihood.
In his contribution the Manager for Simbaru Pharmacy said the maintenance and cleaning of Kenema city must be addressed by community stake holders in Kenema emphasizing that youths in particular must be encouraged to be involved in the safe cleaning exercise of Kenema city to attain its status as the third city in this Country.
