Sierra Leone: There was a serious road traffic accident few days ago along the Jui highway close to the hospital where dozens of people were seriously injured and they were taken to the hospital for treatment. The vehicle involved had somersaulted, and because it was close to the Jui friendship hospital all of the wounded were taken there for immediate treatment as the Emergency room was full.
However, with the joint efforts of the Chinese Medical Team and their Sierra Leoneans counterparts all of the wounded were treated and referrals were made to other hospitals, but fortunately there was no fatality.
The Head of the Chinese Medical Team Dr Feng Chao said by the evening of the same day, almost all of the wounded had been treated very quickly and effectively and some of them were able to return home safely.
“We were happy to come to the aid of all those who needed our help at that time as it was during that period that we were planning to open the hospital to all because there are no Covid patients anymore in the hospital so we want to help the sick as often as possible after a long time treating Covid patients.”
He said because of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital has been in a state of semi-closure since the first half of 2020. However, with the help of the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone and the China Medical Team, the hospital has finally reopened under effective COVID-19 pandemic control after overcoming various difficulties.
“During the suspension period of the hospital, the 22nd batch of China Medical Team in Sierra Leone arrived in Freetown on September 18, 2020. They were dispatched to the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital and all 19 medical workers, covering internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, infectious diseases, traditional Chinese medicine, critical care medicine, radiology, ultrasound, laboratory and other departments. They all came from China’s first-class teaching hospitals and have extremely rich clinical, teaching and scientific research experience.”
Dr Chao averred that the China Medical Team held several meetings, discussions and consultations with the management of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital, went all out to overcome all difficulties, and actively promoted infrastructure and re-operation of the hospital; with the help of the Chinese government and the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone.
“We have been working assiduously to solve the problems of the hospital’s water and electricity supply one by one; In addition, the Chinese government donated a large amount of medical equipment and medicines. Among them, they donated haematology analyzer which is the most advanced in Sierra Leone and can automatically perform 5-part differential blood count. Once in place, the medical team began to train Sierra Leone employees in full swing. In addition, it is reported that the hospital is also preparing to build a specialized disease medical center, creating two superior specialties of cardiology and trauma center.”
The Team Leader noted that it’s been proved by facts that all these efforts have been fruitful, and the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital has been able to resume normal operations. As of press time, the outpatient clinics of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital have been fully opened now, and all specialties have basically achieved normal operation. The blood biochemical tests, electrocardiogram, X-ray, ultrasound and other tests and examinations can be carried out routinely. Patients have started coming into the hospital this week slowly to start seeing different doctors.
Dr Feng Chao, the captain of the China Medical Team, said: “In addition to paying attention to the present, we will work with the Sierra Leone people to do a good job of medical services and fight the COVID-19 pandemic. We are more focused on the future and hope to push forward the construction and development of Sierra Leone’s health system. We hope to promote the comprehensive development of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital’s medical, teaching and research trinity, and make it as the best medical center in West Africa to better serve the people of Sierra Leone and build a community of common health for mankind as advocated by President Xi Jinping.”
