Journalists engaged on business issue
In order to improve on the necessary skills and other techniques in the field of journalism, Journalists for Human Rights a Canadian based institution has organized a day seminar, at the Santana house in Freetown on the topic ‘reporting on business issue’.
Addressing journalists and other human rights representatives, the facilitator Stephen Douglas said journalists in this country have wealth of experience in reporting about issues concerning the development of the country, but thus encouraged them to extend these brilliant ideas to the business sector as well.
He said financial sectors such as the banks, stock exchange, bureaus, money lenders, need the media and that journalists should see to it that cordial relationship exist amongst them.
Mr. Douglas said the media should market these institutions well so that the public would be able to understand exactly the purpose for which it exist.
He did not only condemned bad reporting but admonished reporters to repot on issues that are newsworthy in order to captivate the attention of the readers.
He further reiterated that if these home grown institutions are to match with other international business houses, thorough descriptions with regards to achievements and failures must be made known to the public, for better assessment
Shan Jethi of the BBC and also the director of Business Bomba organization, commended the media houses for their supports in selling his organization.
He however ushered praises on the cotton tree news reporters for being too critical and technically knowledgeable in the profession. He said his recent panelist discussion with them at the studios, clearly show their proficiency.
Dr. Bob Conteh a lecturer from Njala university spoke on the economy of the country. He  said the banks, insurance companies, bureau, all play parts in the development of the economy of the state. He said until the media genuinely started to propagate the good services of these institutions, the average sierra Leonean would never understand the services  it offers and that such information must go down to the rural communities dwellers.
