Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a press conference held at the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday, Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah officially declared the November 26th incident as a “failed coup attempt.”
Minister Bah stated that from what the security and intelligence forces gathered the intention of the assailants “was to illegally subvert and overthrow the democratically elected government of this country.”
He confirmed that “they failed and plenty of the leaders are currently in police custody or they are on the run.”
Providing details on the casualties, Minister Bah disclosed that a total of 21 individuals lost their lives in the unfortunate event.
Among them were 14 members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), one member of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), one Correctional Officer, three assailants, one Private Security personnel, and one female.
Regarding arrests made in connection with the incident, the Minister reported that 13 RSLAF personnel and one civilian are currently in custody. The Inspector General assured the public that ongoing mopping-up operations are underway to capture remaining attackers and escaped prisoners, emphasising that the situation is now under control.
