IRC ends Legacy Initiative Education in Kenema
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has ended a one day Legacy Initiative Education (LIE) conference organized for stakeholders in Kenema city. In his opening statement the Deputy Director of Education East (DDE) who doubled as chairman of the programme John Amara Swarray told participants that the conference was designed to enable key stakeholders in the region to share experience, best practices and lessons learnt during the period under review for Kono and Kenema Districts. He also paid tribute to the IRC and described the organization as a unique institution among others for its attempt to promote education in the country by taking up the challenges in order to make quality education accessible to all especially at the Rural Communities and called on the beneficiaries of the project in the two Districts to make good use of the resources invested in them for sustainable development. John Swaray stressed that the aim of the Ministry of Education is geared towards the provision of quality education in the country and also collaborating with other partners to promote quality education at all levels. In her statement the IRC Legacy Programme Manager in Kenema District Patricia G. Ansumana disclosed that they are operating in 12 Rural Junior Secondary schools in Kenema and Kono Districts respectively with six each in both Districts and reiterated that there are trained teachers in the various localities. She appealed to the Local Authorities and Principals of the various localities to enhance the project. She added that the Legacy Project is to improve on access to quality education in JSS one in rural community schools in Kenema and Kono Districts. Patricia G. Ansumana further stated that IRC is providing capacity building training programmes for the Legacy Project supported schools and communities on equal scale as part of their corporate responsibilities aimed at making the project a success story in the region. Madam Ansumana cited long distance, teenage pregnancy; irregularities in attendance and the lack of adequate salaries for IRC trained teachers in the 12 schools in the two districts whose names are not on government pay roll as some of the major factors militating against the implementation of the project in Kono and Kenema districts.
