Marauding students of the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) over the weekend staged a noisy demonstration halting classes and barricading the route calling on the Director of IPAM, Dr Bert Williams not to resign.
The IPAM Student Union Information Minister, David Mendegellah told Awoko that they were demonstrating against the resignation of Dr Bert Williams and wanted him to stay.
“ This is a man who has put a lot of things in place including sound educational policies and we do want him to stay because if he goes all the good policies now in place will not be implemented” he said.
The students continued their demonstration up to 1 pm when the Student Union Education Minister, Ezekiel Williams read an apology letter on behalf of the students stating that “ sometime in November we made demands relating to fees, examination time table, student union affairs, although they were genuine concerns, we have realised the approach used to pursue them was not the best and for that we are sincerely sorry as we do not intend to hurt you sir”
When Dr Williams took the stage amidst thunderous applause from the students, he said “ I am actually surprised and in fact shocked by what has happened”. He revealed the shocking news to them saying, “I did resign and I am baffled where these new lovers (students) come from”
Dr Williams went on, “ there are lots of people who run IPAM. I am not the only one and its important to mention that as it is never possible for one person to run an institution”
Dr Williams told the students that discussions were ongoing between him and the university authorities about his resignation as he put it “ anything could happen”.
