Sierra Leone: According to Statistics Sierra Leone’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), monthly inflation for the month of April 2021 saw a slight increase of 0.65% from 8.95% in March 2021 to 9.60% in April 2021, while monthly inflation also climbed by 1.89% from 0.84% in March 2021 up to 2.73% in April 2021.
Statistician General, Professor Osman Sankoh, disclosed that Statistics Sierra Leone collects prices for 436 items that were identified in 2008 (base/reference year), adding that the base year can only be changed after Statistics Sierra Leone conduct a living standard survey.
He acknowledged that some of the current CPI contained items are no longer being used by consumers, but maintained that the institution cannot just change some of these items overnight, but will have to follow due process. He continued that Statistics Sierra Leone chooses specific markets across four regions from where prices are collected.
Director of National Account and Economic Statistics, Statistics Sierra Leone, Mwuluma Andrew Bryma Gegbe, disclosed that food inflation is the major cause of national inflation. However, he reiterated that the month of April saw a slight increase in inflation, but noted that the country still maintains a single digit.
Gegbe, in a power point presentation also explained the key upward movers as well as the key downward movers for the CPI. Key upward movers according to the CPI indicate that alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics increased from 9.98% in March 2021 to 13.80% in April 2021. The inflation rates increased by 3.82% year-on-year.
Also, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels increased from 2.92% in March 2021 to 7.39% in April 2021. The inflation rate increased by 4.47% year-on-year, whereas, health declined by 1.43% from 1.86% in March 2021 to -3.29% in April 2021.
In addition, miscellaneous goods and services declined by 1.97% from 3.27% in March 2021to 1.30% in April 2021.
The CPI for Western Region went up to 8.11% from 7.90% in April 2021, whiles Northern Region dropped to 12.79% from 9.93% in April 2021.
On the other hand, Southern Region experienced a decrease from 10.59% to 10.49% in April 2021, whiles Eastern Region also dropped from 8.57% in March to 7.51% in April 2021.
