DASWANI Enterprise, one of the leading rum producing entities in Freetown at Calton Carew Road off Wilkinson Road in Freetown, was a trouble spot in the evening hours of Monday when an Indian, Maranam, allegedly hit one of the workers, Ajibu Barrie.
It all started when youths of that community got a tip off about the unfortunate incident which led to the death of Barrie, one of the longest serving drivers of DASWANI Enterprise.
Report says on hearing the news, the youth wasted no time in pelting the structure which housed the company with stones and bottles thereby causing huge damage to the building.
They even went to an extent of breaking into the store and carted away property including rums worth million of Leones.
Maranam, who is said to be unqualified driver, started a Pajero car with registration number ABH 632, and on starting the car it reversed and hit the deceased.
Frantic efforts were made by the company to rescue him but he passed away on arrival at the Choithram Hospital in Freetown.
There are conflicting reports regarding the death of the victim. Some say the death was not unconnected to ritual while others attributed it to an accidental occurrence.
It was the timely intervention of some police personnel that calm the situation. Investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of the deceased is ongoing at the Congo Cross police station.
