Two former aspirants of the All People’s Congress (APC) in constituency 92 and 95 in the Western Area Rural, who were denied the symbol to contest the local council elections, have declared themselves independent.
According to the community people in constituency 92 ward 327, they alleged that Kadie Mahoi who the party gave symbol was an active supporter of and even campaign for the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) during the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections but cross carpeted to the APC when their party lost.
They alleged that Ms Mahoi was never an APC supporter and that she had never attended meetings or APC activities in the constituency.
The community people demanded that they wanted to see Kadie Mahoi’s membership card and also to know when she joined the party.
They explained that they had thrown their overwhelming support to the independent candidate.
One of the candidates and incumbent councillor of constituency 92 said he applied for chairmanship for the Western Area Rural District Council (WARDC) and that he was called twice by the symbol committee and was asked to step down with the promise that they would give him councillorship.
He said he did that and was surprised last Thursday when he heard over the APC radio that the symbol was given to another candidate.
The incumbent councillor disclosed that seven of them aspired for chairmanship, two stood down, and those that were denied the chairmanship were given the symbol to contest as councilors.
The worried looking man noted that even incumbent councilors and those who stood down who applied for symbols were not given. In constituency 95 ward 345 the people said they would not vote for Mahmood Tejan Sillah but for the independent candidate because the former was involved in a corruption scandal in the community.
The community people alleged that even the constituency executive had vowed not to support Sillah but the independent candidate.
The incumbent councillor of that constituency explained that he also applied for chairmanship but was denied, noting that other candidates who applied for the chairmanship were given symbol to contest as councilors.
