Precisely two years since it started operations in Sierra Leone, the most effective bank, arguably, Ecobank has made awesome achievements.
The bank which has invested close to $ 5million in so short a time has leaped three spaces up the bank ranking index in terms of asset acquisition. “We came in as the 8th bank in Sierra Leone, but now we are ranked 5th,” disclosed Head of Wholesale Banking Moses Sesay.
During a conducted tour recently on three of the bank’s newly established outlets, the Wilkinson Road Branch Manager, Zyna Cole explained that the branch is part of their drive to take banking to the door steps of their customers. “The Wilkinson Road branch would take care of those residing in and around the vicinity and it’s environ; instead of going all the way to town for bank transaction,” she explained; adding that there is no class distinction as the bank caters for all and sundry.
At the east end of Freetown, Cline Town’s Branch Manager, Alie Mohamed Sillah explained that the bank has attracted numerous customers, noting that one of the secret of their success is that they have marketed their products well and also ensure that it is tailor-made to fit customers’ desire.
He also disclosed that Ecobank has Direct Sales Agents (DSA’s) who are responsible for taking banking to the door step of customers. He further explained that they have turned around time policy at Ecobank which ensures that “coming customers do not spend more than five minutes doing bank transaction.”
Giving an overview of Ecobank, Head of Operations Fiffi Brandful explained that the bank started its operations in November 2006 “when we received the licenses from the Central Bank allowing us to engage in banking business in Sierra Leone.”
He disclosed that the bank started operations with eighteen (18) people adding that at present “We had about 160 staff, and I’m glad to note that of the lot only four of us are non Sierra Leoneans,” said Brandful.
This, he said, “is an indication of Ecobank’s commitment to the Country.”
He maintained that “in the matter of two years we have being able to open thus far, about nine outlets including outlets in Makeni and Kenema.”
He assured that within two years “Ecobank would have opened close to 12 outlets.” This, he intimated, “is a sign of commitment to the Country and also to indicate that we are not here by day and ran away by night, we are with the people of Sierra Leone through and through.”
With reference to the products offered by the bank, he said, “we offer various products and services, but when it comes to transfers within Africa ours is the best,” he assured.
The reason, Brandful explained is “because we have affiliates in all the countries…” Head of Retail Department, Mohamed Bah said the bank provides a one stop solution to the banking needs of business people, the student population, petty traders and individuals.
He noted that his responsibility is to take banking to the door step of the people of Sierra Leone with first class banking facilities.
