IMC ends orientation & training seminar for media monitors

In its effort to ensure professionalism and strengthening of the media landscape and further mapping out strategies for media monitors ahead of the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, the IMC has concluded a one day National Media Monitor’s Orientation Seminar in Kenema on the 22nd March, 2011. The Commission in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme 25 media monitors were drawn from across the country, to be trained in the use of newly developed Media Monitoring Guidelines, research instruments and tools geared to track media performance and infringements to the media code of practice. The seminar also attracted Commissioners and a number of observers drawn from various local networks in the region. The establishment of an IMC Monitoring, Research and Projects Unit based in Freetown has now opened the way for better trained field monitors, the development of tools for field-based data collection and production of instant charts and media analysis for a variety of publics .The Opening ceremony was chaired by Commissioner Joshua Nicol and included representatives of the District Council, the City Council and the Office of the Resident Minister of the Eastern Region. They all expressed delight and appreciation for the orientation and training of the media monitor and stressed the significant role of the IMC in sustaining peace during the election. The seminar provided an opportunity to introduce IMC’s recently employed Consultant/Director Mr. Batilloi Warritay, who in conjunction with the Chairperson Bernadette Cole, and Commissioner Joshua Nicol and Augustine Garmoh conducted the seminar. The programme covered a series of topics including the Elements of Media Monitoring, pretesting of questionnaires and monitoring formats for a new database, understanding key audiences and structures; and an appreciation of the Media Code of Practice and the IMC Act among others. The seminar ended with presentation of certificates to participants and Commissioners by Commissioner Cassandra Davies.
