Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Honorable Bashiru Silikie has underscored that fortifying the efficiency of both the police force and the judiciary would significantly ease the struggle against kush and substance abuse.
The distinguished deputy leader of government business issued a resounding call to action directed at the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General (AG) during parliamentary deliberations on the regulatory framework for President Bio’s declaration of a state of public health emergency. He urged these key institutions to exhibit utmost professionalism and efficacy in combating kush and substance abuse nationwide.
“Efficiency and professionalism must be paramount in our battle against kush,” emphasized Hon. Bashiru.
In his address, the deputy leader highlighted the concerning involvement of certain security personnel in substance abuse, as well as the illicit smuggling and distribution of harmful drugs.
Honorable Mohamed Bangura of the All People’s Congress Party (APC), representing Karene District, commended the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in tackling the kush menace.
“The youth are suffering due to kush addiction,” lamented Hon. Bangura, citing personal experiences of individuals succumbing to addiction.
Expressing aspirations for the highest office, Hon. Bangura emphasized his grave concern over the pervasive drug issue.
Contributing to the discussion, Honorable Quinton Salia of the SLPP from Kailahun District stressed the urgency of safeguarding the nation’s future leaders. He urged the IGP to institute stringent disciplinary measures for erring officers.
“I implore the IGP to enforce strict discipline within the ranks,” pleaded Hon. Quinton.
Furthermore, he advocated for stiffer penalties to be imposed by magistrates and judges on those involved in the importation and distribution of kush and other harmful substances.
Honorable Hawa Conteh, also of the APC, echoed concerns regarding the socioeconomic factors fueling substance abuse among the youth. She identified the current economic climate as a catalyst for despair among young people, emphasizing their indispensable role in national development.
“The economic disenchantment among our youth is exacerbating substance abuse,” stated Hon. Conteh.
She called upon all concerned citizens to rally together in support of the fight against kush, recognizing the imperative of collective action in addressing this pressing societal challenge. SEG/26/4/2024
