Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The Commissioner for the East District Commercial Motor Bike Riders Union, Mohamed S. Turay, presided over the Approved School Park Chairmen election on Thursday. The voting took place at the City Council facility, featuring three candidates contending for the Chairmen position, each represented by a distinct symbol.
The candidates and their symbols were Dauda A. Sesay (‘Helmet’), Ibrahim Sinneh Kamara (‘Key’), and Foday Gbla (‘Motor Bike’). The voting process began at 10 am, and the Commissioner announced that 643 voters were registered for the election, with 587 participating in the voting. However, 24 void votes were identified during the counting process.
After sorting and counting, the Commissioner declared the results at 6 pm. Mr. Foday A. Gbla received 121 votes, Mr. Dauda Abu Sesay secured 162 votes, and Mr. Ibrahim Sinneh Kamara emerged as the winner with 280 votes.
“As the electoral Commissioner for the Approved school election, I hereby declare Mr. Ibrahim Sinneh Kamara as the winner,” he announced.
Prior to the results announcement, all three contenders had pledged to maintain peace, avoid violence, and support the winner. The Public Relations Officer of the Motorbike Rider East District revealed that district elections occur every four and a half years, while park elections happen every three years.
In contrast to previous years, the election faced fewer challenges, such as providing voter ID cards, ballot papers, the conduct of the election, and demands for security from the Sierra Leone Police (SLP). The contenders expressed satisfaction with the peaceful and transparent nature of the election. AJ/17/11/2023
