Contrary to speculations that President Koroma will be replacing the electoral commissioner East with his man, the newly approved commissioner Sylvanus Torto has told Awoko he was not the president’s man.
Mr Torto spoke to Awoko Tuesday immediately he was approved by parliament, reacting to electoral malpractices to the myth surrounding the Kailahun court barray.
A former university lecturer in ethics reacted to the question of whether he might be lured by the ruling party to secure votes, he reacted: “It is not left with me or the commission to get votes for political parties it is left with the parties to actually earn their votes, work for it and canvass and get votes. The electoral commission, the little I know about it, is not responsible for getting votes for political parties.”
He reacted to the question of being the president’s man, “I am not the president’s man. I am a man of the people, a man of Sierra Leone, a man of righteousness and fortitude. My performance at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission attests to the fact that I am capable of actually handling situations that are even more volatile.”
Mr Torto stressed that he was nobody’s hatchet and did not think necessities would arise for his replacement like his predecessor, Edward Nyallay who was relieved of his duties for vote rigging in his area.
The electoral commissioner East spoke of his major challenge to increase voters’ sensitization as there were a colossal number of void votes and efforts should be made to inform the people how to vote.
The commissioner could not elaborate on the myth surrounding the Kailahun Court barray he only responded as saying, “I do not want to really comment on this popular cliché going on about Kailahun Court barray because I am not aware of the details and to make any comment one needs to know, look at the circumstances, aware of the details before you make any conclusive statement which I have not been preview to.”
He explained that he would not allow any invalid votes nor would he allow any to be counted in his area.
How to prevent that he said by his active performance, contribution suggestions, proposals to the other members on the commission as situations might come up and they would be solved according to the gravity of it.
“The sensitive nature, the timing and situation what and what materials are involved and its difficult to take decisions in the vacuum and one of the things I teach at the university is decision making which is a very important management principle so , one has to look at the process to actually arrive at a sensible decision” he espoused.
