The report of The Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone (HRCSL) is calling on Government to take ownership of the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
The report stated that the national stakeholders meeting on the status of implementation of the TRC recommendations in November organized by HRCSL and UNIOSIL, urged the Government to take ownership of the implementation process of the recommendations and formulate a comprehensive implementation strategy, with clear allocation of responsibilities for the relevant ministries and agencies.
“The government persists in breach of its obligation to fulfill human rights by the non operationalization of the TRC follow up Committee provided in the TRC report and the TRC Act 2000”.
The commission mentioned that the implementation of other key TRC recommendations particularly reparation for categories of victims remains outstanding despite making strides in undertaking certain policies like the establishment of the Anti Corruption Commission, the Human Rights Commission, Local Government and District councils and the passage of the Gender Justice Acts.
The TRC report was submitted to government in 2004 and its recommendations were divided in to four categories, imperative, work towards, serious consideration and calls on.
