Deputy Mayor of the Freetown, Foday Kalokoh died in a gruesome road accident on Sunday along the Makeni-Magburaka highway.
It happened at around 10:45, just hours after Mr Kalokoh, in his capacity as organizing secretary of the All People’s Congress party was in full public glare at the peace rally in Makeni, aimed at celebrating the coming together of various factions within the party.
Mr Kalokoh and two other members of the APC, died after the back tyre of the 4 runner Jeep they were traveling on to Kono exploded resulting in the vehicle somersaulting.
The accident happened at Rogbonko village some seven miles from Makeni.
The other two that died with the deputy mayor were his Chief Security Officer and an APC aspirant Samuel Fornah, who reportedly flew into town from Britain to participate in the party’s peace rally in Makeni last Saturday.
According to our Makeni correspondent, other passengers in critical condition and are admitted at the Makeni government hospital. They include the driver of the vehicle Samuel Sawyer, Mohamed Koroma, Kadiatu Balah Barri and Koleh Conteh.
When news of the tragic accident reached Makeni, APC party stalwarts stormed the Makeni government hospital while others dash to the accident scene.
Meanwhile, President Tejan Kabbah has expressed “deep sorrow” for the loss of Mr. Kalokoh.
“Mr. Kalokoh was a promising national figure and an able interlocutor for both his party and the Council for which he was deputy head. His death will be deeply felt.” A Presidential press release states.
