Guma Valley Water Company on Friday met with MPs from the Western Area and the various Oversight Committees dealing with water at Committee Room No-1.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Energy and Water Resources, Hon. Ibrahim Sorie explained that their function is to oversee the line ministry and its agencies and to ensure that laws passed or policies brought up for approval are implemented.
He also said they ensure that they give support to the ministry for the essential services they provide. Hon Sorie further stated that the reason why MPs from the Western Area were the target was because of the contentious water problem in the city.
Dennis Streeter, Co-Consultant A.D. Media (SL) Ltd. said the meeting was part of Guma Valley’s strategy of public awareness after realizing the daunting task of providing water to every facet of the community.
He recognized that the present capacity of the Company cannot match with the population explosion in the city as well as the contending problem of destroyed street pumps, non payment of bills and water shortages. Mr. Streeter sent out a message for Behavioral Change.
The Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Martin Bash Kamara reiterated that more Public Relations work was needed to change people’s perceptions about the use of water to be free. He said the provision of water involves a lot but that his ministry is determined to provide affordable and pure water.
The Deputy Mayor of the Freetown City Council,Gibril Kanu who are one of the of the two shareholders of Guma Valley Water Company pitied the Company for to utilizing facilities that are not commensurate to the present population. He called on consumers to contribute positively for the improvement of the Company.
The Chairman of the Guma Board, Dr. Nana Pratt explained the poor state of the company when she took office and stressed that internal, external, weak technical, aged infrastructure, non payment of bills and illegal connection confronts the company. She said about 60% of the scarce amount of water supplied are used free.
