The German Technical Cooperation Food Security and Reconciliation (GTZ/FSR), operating in the border chiefdoms of Kailahun and Kono districts, has held its steering committee meeting in Kenema.
In his opening remark the chairman of the Kailahun District Council Augustine Kortu, who deputized the GTZ/FSR steering committee chairman who doubles as the Director of Local government A.J.P Lebbie, welcomed participants and asked them to follow up on approved local subsidies.
Giving updates on project activities the programmes officer, Rex Mohamed Kenneh, said between October 2006 and October 2007 GTZ/FSR gave support to Ward Development Committees (WDCs) in GTZ/FSR operational area, in planning their own development programmes as well as implementing some of these activities, including support to toilet construction projects.
The organization has also begun implementing youth peace initiative activities in Lei and Toli chiefdoms in Kono district with CARITAS Kenema as implementing partner. It has also started the implementation of Income Generating Activities in Tomandu in the Kissi Teng Chiefdom and Mano in the Kissi Tongi chiefdom in Kailahun districts involving two women groups. Significant achievements have been made so far and the activity is on going. Most of the 2006/7 activities have been completed and handed over to the respective communities through the elected Project Management Committees and Ward Development Committees. On the next plan of action the programmes officer spoke about the completion of Inland Valley Swamp (IVS) rice cultivation in all targeted villages and handing over of activities through PMCs.
