Sierra Leone: In a signed Public notice, the ministry of Fishery and Marine Resources (MFMR) has informed the general public of government’s implementation of this year’s ‘Closed Season’ from Saturday 1st May to 31st May 2021. The closure according to the notice, is aimed at conserving the country’s fish stocks from depletion.
According to the Ministry, the period will be used to ensure all industrial fishing vessels and decked semi-industrial fishing vessel stop fishing at 00:00 hours since Friday 30th April, until 31st May 2021. It is the expectation of the ministry that all fishing vessels should be at port and anchor for the entire period. Government is warning all industrial fishing vessels and decked semi-industrial fishing vessel to put on their monitoring system during the period for ease of monitoring.
Owing to the fact that all vessels are expected to be at the port with their monitoring system on, the ministry prior to now has placed a ban on exportation of fish for both industrial fishing companies and fish processing plants by land, sea, and air since 20th April until 31st May 2021.
It is also expected, industrial fishing company should stock their cold rooms with different species which must be calculated based on the number of fishing vessels operated by those companies, aiming at addressing the issue of shortage of fish in the local market.
