Methodist Girls High School and Albert Academy Secondary Schools, have won the world Marathon Challenge 2012 that took place at the National Stadium Brookfield’s, in Freetown over the weekend.
In all, both girls and boys from nine secondary schools in Freetown took part in the marathon race. Boys schools were combined with Secondary girls schools with both girls and boys providing athletes for both girls and boys.
The participating schools provided 13 athletes each for both girls and boys who ran the 200 meters each with the girls handing the baton to boys and in return the boys handed the baton to girls five times each. The Champions, the runner-up, the third place and the giant trophy were given to winners in the various categories.
At the end of the race, Methodist Girls High School together with Albert Academy won the race.
Saint Edwards and Saint Joseph’s Secondary school for Girls came second while third was Prince of Wales and Freetown Secondary School for Girls.
Ahmadiyya Secondary school came fourth. At the end of the race, certificates of participation were given to all the participating schools. Medals were also given to winners.
The Marathon was sponsored by Africell and ECOBank and the competition was organized by Save the Children, a non-profit organization in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Athletics association.
