The Deputy Foreign Policy Spokesman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Parliamentary group, Markus Meckel in an interactive session with media practitioners at the Bintumani Hotel, yesterday called for peaceful Presidential and Parliamentary elections come August 11.
In his special message to Sierra Leoneans, Mr Meckel who is a member of Bundestag (German Parliament) said, “There should be a peaceful campaign and violence free elections.”
He went on to state that he admires the work done by Christina Thorpe and her Commission adding that relentless efforts are being made to ensure free and fair elections.
He stated that the elections have to be transparent and fair and it should be clear for candidates to accept the result.
Mr. Meckel who is in Sierra Leone for the second time explained that his impression so far was that there is an improvement in the political atmosphere and people are determined more than ever to shape the future of this country.
He explained that he has spoken with various political party leaders and representatives, highlighting that the SLPP spoke about their legacies which are peace; respect for human right; improvement in education and efforts to minimize corruption.
He added that the APC spoke of endemic corruption, and unemployment; arguing that SLPP has not done much to combat corruption, while PMDC promises better governance.
“We are not interested in who is going to be elected, we are interested that there is no antagonism,” the German MP said.
Mr Meckel was accompanied by the former Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Guinea and Sierra Leone; Mr. Karl Prinz who arrived in Freetown on Sunday on a round trip to the three Mano River Union Countries.
