Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a resolute effort to combat substance abuse in Sierra Leone, Freetown Rotary Clubs, in collaboration with Rotractors and Interactors, have launched a comprehensive campaign aimed at raising awareness and fostering community support.
Under the visionary leadership of President Sybil Bailor from the Freetown Rotary Club and President Emerlin George of Rotary Freetown Sunset, the initiative commenced with a spirited soccer match held at the Young Men Sports Club in Freetown.
Organized by past President Rotarian Alpha O Tejan Jalloh, the event witnessed the convergence of community members, local officials, and representatives from various organizations in a powerful display of solidarity.
President Bailor emphasized the gravity of the issue, stating, “This event marks the beginning of a concerted effort to raise awareness about the scourge of substance abuse that is troubling our nation.” She underscored the importance of uniting all Rotary Clubs, irrespective of gender, in a vibrant activity like soccer to underscore the imperative of collective action in addressing this pressing issue.
President George echoed Bailor’s sentiments, highlighting the pivotal role of youth in spreading the anti-substance abuse message. “Our Rotractors and Interactors embody the vibrancy and importance of the younger generation,” she remarked. “It’s time for us to extend care and support to one another, recognizing that we are all part of the same family.”
The soccer match served as the inaugural event of this multifaceted campaign, drawing participants and spectators alike to show their solidarity for the cause. It served as a poignant reminder of the collective commitment to combatting substance abuse.
President George further illuminated ongoing outreach projects aimed at providing moral, medical, and counselling support to youths affected by substance abuse in communities across Sierra Leone. “We are ensuring that no one faces this challenge alone,” she affirmed.
The collaborative endeavours of the Rotary Clubs, Rotractors, and Interactors underscore a holistic approach to community engagement in the fight against substance abuse. By bringing together individuals of diverse ages and backgrounds, the initiative seeks to foster a culture of support, understanding, and resilience, paving the way for a brighter and healthier future for all Sierra Leoneans.
As the soccer match drew to a close, participants and supporters departed with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to continue the battle against substance abuse. With President Bailor and President George at the helm, the Freetown Rotary Clubs stand united in their commitment to effect tangible change in the lives of those impacted by this pressing issue.
