Aspirant for the Mayorship under the SLPP in Kono, Sahr Lawrence Kamithy yesterday told Awoko that, they were chased with stones and bottles and that the city of Kono was volatile following persistent attacks on SLPP members, an act allegedly perpetrated by APC youths in Kono.
According to Kamithy, the 15th and 16th of June was slated for the launch of the SLPP campaign in Kono and that, they were surprised to have been attacked by youths who were working under the directives of one Chief S N Gborie in Kono. “The Political Party Registration Commission and other main players in the political process had earlier given a timetable for all political campaigning. The APC went out on the day we (SLPP) were supposed to be out “, Kamithy said.
Sahr Kamithy also disclosed that, “the SLPP had secured clearance from the Tankoro police division in Kono since we had invited Solomon Berewa to do the launching for us as former SLPP Leader but later chiefs went to the police station to request that, Berewa not be allowed to come to Kono or that if the SLPP in Kono insist on Berewa’s arrival, they (SLPP), should take responsibility for whatever thing that will follow”.
On the 15th of June, Kamithy said, the SLPP had come out to welcome Berewa in the city of Kono when a group of youths allegedly under the APC Task Force attacked the motorcade of Berewa, which resulted in the destruction of vehicles and one SLPP member injured. However, the SLPP was said to have gone ahead with their official launching of the campaign process as Solomon Berewa made a statement and Alhaji UNS Jah was reported to have officially declared the campaign open for the SLPP.
As a result, the SLPP candidate said, he had decided to change his campaign strategy since he used to go out and talk to people. “I have decided to change that. I am now using my campaign managers to go round and talk to people. I have realized that the APC are losing ground and as a result they think, intimidating us could be the best way out for them”.
He said, chiefs have been very instrumental in the recent fracas in Kono and feared that, their position on national politics could not tell well for the country’s development. Chiefs he said went to one of the local radio stations to threaten people that, they should support the APC because, one of their sons is the Vice President, Kamithy alleged.
He however expressed dismay that, while their members were being attacked in the presence of Police officers, none of the assailants were arrested.
Meanwhile, an APC regional executive member in Kono Dianna Konomanyie when telephoned to comment on the alleged attack on SLPP members by APC party supporters said, she could not comment on the issues since she was in Makali when she got a call that SLPP had been attacked. “I left Kono when the SLPP were rallying and so I was surprised that they were attacked”, Konomanyie said.
She said, she would have to investigate whether indeed APC members attacked the SLPP while they were rallying before she could comment on the issue.
Efforts were also made by Awoko to get the reaction of the Local Unit Commander of the Tankoro Division in Kono, Amos Kargbo but his mobile phone was off, unto press time
The city of Kono has proved to be volatile as was manifested during the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
